The Driving Tests

In November 2002, the new theory test was introduced and consists of two parts. The first being multiple choice questions in total of which you need to attain 43 correct answers out of a possible 50 to pass. The second being the hazard perception element. The second part of the test is the hazard perception element. Where there are 14 video clips, lasting approximately 1 minute each. You must score 44 out of the 75 to pass.

Once you have passed your theory test you then have a 2 year period in which to pass your practical test. Failure to pass your practical test within this time will result in having to undertake the whole theory test again.

The practical test consists of two parts. The first is two vehicle safety check questions known as show me, tell me. Incorrect answers result in a minor fault being recorded on your test report form.

Example of show me tell me

Q- Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.

A - Identify reservoir and explain how to check level.

Q - Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).

A - Check is carried out by using control (turn on ignition if necessary).

In addition to the show me, tell me part of the test your eyesight will be checked. You must be able to read a number plate at a distance of 20.5m (67 feet).

The second part is a practical test of your driving ability. You are allowed 15 minor driving faults on your test report form but 16 and over result in failure of the test. A serious or dangerous fault recorded any where on your test report form will result in failure of the test.

Please bring the following with you to the test:-

  • Theory test pass certificate
  • Your test appointment card
  • Both parts of your photo card licence or old style licence & separate photo ID

Failure to do this will result in Test Centre/DSA cancelling your test and your test fee not being refunded.
